Job Description

Cherokee Federal is seeking a Laboratory Technician III Research Technical Support to support BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratories on site in Frederick, Maryland. The role involves basic cell culture, immunological assays, and animal studies, and requires an active Secret clearance. The position offers a salary between USD 55,000 and 60,000 per year.

Responsibilities

Supports small and large animal studies in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratories.
Performs inoculations with virus, vaccine, or applicable testing material.
Collects tissues for processing and conducts blood sample collection.
Performs in vitro testing of candidate vaccines and therapeutic compounds against a variety of viruses.
Prepares cell culture media and other study supplies, including paperwork, as necessary.
Performs immunological procedures including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western Blot assays.
Performs basic cell culture, plaque assays (PA), plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), PCR, and other assays to support NHP and rodent studies.
Performs basic lab management duties, such as assessing, maintaining, and ordering lab supplies.
Assists with the annual conduct of Equipment Inventory Management in BSL-2 and BSL-3.
May serve as a BSL-2 mentor.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Biology, or a related field and 1+ years lab experience.
Skilled with basic Molecular Biology Assays: ELISA, Western Blot, Plaque Assays, PRNT assays, PCR, etc.
Skilled with animal handling for large and small animals, including NHPs and rodents.
Ability to perform animal inoculations, blood and tissue collection, and sample processing.
Working knowledge/ability to learn GFEBs ordering system.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to multi-task in a high-paced environment.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Prior experience in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 biocontainment labs is preferred.
Must have an active Secret Clearance.
Ability to pass a US Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for participation in the BPRP.
US citizenship.
Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.

The Opportunity

The Scientist Technical Support role is based onsite at the Lake Forest, IL facility (Conway Park) within Abbott's Core Lab Diagnostics Business Unit. The position supports design control, process and product improvements, investigations, and cross-functional collaboration with external suppliers.

Responsibilities

Proactively contribute to design control, process or product improvement activities and investigations; perform or support test and method modifications; recognize adverse trends and emerging issues, and propose or implement solutions.
Project management: independently lead product and process improvements using established principles and procedures.
Monitor performance of multiple manufacturing processes and products with recurring themes; identify adverse trends and drive improvement programs as needed.
Design control and risk management: independently develop and maintain risk management files and organize data for evaluation and decisions.
Complaint and internal investigations: manage investigations, identify root causes, and drive to resolution with minimal supervision.
Provide audit inputs and support as required.
Technical support: develop and design experiments, analyze data, and recommend next steps.
Sharing knowledge: present technical information to management and may present externally to customers and Third-Party Manufacturers (TPMs); share expertise with others in the work group.
Strategic and results-oriented: demonstrate fiscal responsibility through supporting product availability and improvements; propose and implement solutions to internal and external issues.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a scientific or technical field is preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two years (or more) of related work experience; advanced degrees may offset the required years of experience.
