Job Description

HII is seeking a Technical Support Specialist to serve as a Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) Lead onsite at the Navy Warfare Development Center within Norfolk Naval Station. In this role, you will support MOC-EST and NSWC-Corona LVC training, helping teams plan, design, and execute Operational-level Fleet Synthetic Training events. You will also provide support for onsite and distributed training events.

What you will do

  • Ensure the NCTE sustainment team and event support personnel are equipped with valid standard configurations for all assigned and integrated trainers and training capabilities participating in the event.
  • Maintain a valid NCTE Coalition network activation (NATO, JPN, or FVEY) for partner nation training capabilities on Coalition training enclaves.
  • Monitor service disruption notices for planned service or connection outages that could negatively affect the training event, and coordinate with the operational event lead, service disruption coordinator, and or networks support personnel to mitigate issues or adjust conflicting dates when possible.
  • Coordinate with the engineering team to obtain engineering resources needed to support the event, including engineering reach back support.
  • Annotate required additional travel hours and total daily work hours for technical resources, then provide this information to the site manager for inclusion in the official manning plan.
  • Work with the event technical lead to identify the training architecture hardware and assets that directly support the event, ensuring requests are implemented before the event starts to prevent detrimental system updates and reboots.
  • Troubleshoot LVC system issues and ensure training event system interfaces are configured according to documented interface standards.
  • Report technical casualties or disruptions in accordance with NCTE procedures and processes, and coordinate for elevated engineering support when issues cannot be resolved.
  • Collaborate with the event technical lead on mission requirements and partner with engineering as needed to meet those requirements.
  • Develop event-specific diagrams using established integrated capabilities documented in NCTE processes and procedures, incorporating event-specific information provided by the event technical lead or advised by engineering (such as project notes or planning conference minutes).
  • Determine integration status for all required trainers and training capabilities, which will be listed on the event status page.
  • Ensure the event technical lead is informed in the weeks or months leading up to the exercise about applicable training system capabilities, limitations, and related modeling and simulation issues; when a trainer or capability has not completed integration and integration completion is precluded by availability prior to operational checks, coordinate with engineering as needed.

Required qualifications

  • 3 years relevant experience with a Bachelor’s in a related field. Alternative experience pathways include 5 years relevant experience with a Bachelor’s, 3 years relevant experience with a Master’s, 0 years with a PhD or Juris Doctorate, or 9 years relevant experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with Linux (command line) and Windows.
  • Current CompTIA Security+ certification.
  • Technical leadership ability, including addressing technical issues during LVC event execution by identifying appropriate engineering domain problem ownership and engaging engineers from the relevant domains.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate across multiple levels of the organization, from technical collaboration to higher-level status updates for senior leadership.
  • Knowledge of distributed simulation protocols including High Level Architecture (HLA) and Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS).
  • Familiarity with networking concepts, architectures, and protocols such as TCP/IP and UDP.
