Job Description

Support students, faculty, and staff with hands-on desktop and helpdesk support at Howard University’s College of Pharmacy and Center of Excellence. This on-site Desktop Support Technician role supports daily technology needs across computers, servers, and classroom equipment, while helping keep learning and work environments running smoothly.

What you’ll do

  • Provide on-site daily technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff with computer software and hardware.
  • Assist users across the Howard University College of Pharmacy and Center of Excellence, supporting both troubleshooting and installation needs.
  • Manage and maintain College of Pharmacy servers and workstations.
  • Perform weekly checks on Rooms CCH-207, Annex III-117, and COM-3210 to ensure systems are operating properly, reporting technology and facility issues to the appropriate office and following up until resolved.
  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and upgrade servers, computer hardware, and peripheral devices such as monitors, keyboards, and printers.
  • Install and manage approved software packages, including operating systems and professional applications such as word processing and spreadsheet tools, on servers, laptops, and workstations.
  • Support helpdesk needs including ExamSoft installation, upgrades, and troubleshooting during exams.
  • Support multimedia presentations and the equipment used for them.
  • Document reported issues and resolutions in the ticketing database for historical reference.
  • Develop work plans for technology projects, set deadlines, and ensure timely completion.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of products, trends, and services while following help desk policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and resolve issues.
  • Coordinate scheduling arrangements for technology office equipment setup.
  • Report major networking and equipment problems to Howard University IT.
  • Communicate with equipment vendors regarding maintenance contracts and upgrade projects.
  • Conduct yearly budget cost analysis for technology projects, services, and products needed to sustain technology improvements.
  • Administer and manage echo 360 accounts for faculty and students, and train users on echo 360 and the Canvas LMS system.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What we need from you

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (Networking administration, Information Systems, Computer Technology).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in technical computer support, networking, and web application design preferred.
  • Consideration for candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Core competencies

  • Knowledge of Windows Server environment, hardware maintenance, network management, IT networking, and software/hardware installation and troubleshooting, including router and switcher installation and configuration.
  • Experience using current desktop operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of web technology and database administration.
  • Familiarity with Smart Board technology, including the ability to provide computer demonstrations and configure notebooks.
  • Ability to train others, communicate effectively within a diverse population, read and interpret technical documentation, organize work efficiently, and deliver high customer service and professionalism.
