Job Description

The Senior Microcomputer Technical Support Specialist supports the NY HELPS program on site in West Seneca, New York, overseeing LAN/WAN administration, software installation and maintenance, and user training across multiple locations.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, support, and implement local area networks and their related operating systems.
  • Direct the installation, customization, and ongoing maintenance of vendor supplied software for LAN operations.
  • Create and maintain LAN operating systems, including Novell, Mac OS X, DOS, and Microsoft Windows.
  • Prepare charts, tables, and diagrams to aid in analyzing LAN related problems.
  • Coordinate with the WNYRIC Senior WAN Specialist to sustain optimal network performance.
  • Advise training staff in the development of comprehensive training programs for LAN administrators.
  • Coordinate monitoring and adjustments of LAN systems to achieve peak performance.
  • Organize and maintain LAN system documentation.
  • Assist in training and instruction of users on LAN operating systems.
  • Evaluate new methods and procedures for applicability to LAN/WAN technology.
  • Coordinate the generation, customization, and support of communications software connectivity such as Percomm and TN3270 Enterprise Server.
  • Provide training for network operators in effective use of communications hardware, network management tools, and LAN/WAN technology.
  • Assess hardware and software and present management with informed recommendations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in relation to the civil service job description for this title.

Requirements

  • A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree and three years of data processing experience, including at least one year in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software, and at least one year in the installation and maintenance of LAN operating systems.
  • B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two- or four-year college or university with an Associate's degree in Data Processing, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field, and five years of data processing experience including at least one year in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software, and one year in the installation and maintenance of LAN operating systems.
  • C) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and seven years of data processing experience, including at least one year in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software, and one year in the installation and maintenance of LAN operating systems.
  • D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) through (C).

Minimum Civil Service Qualifications

  • A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree and three years of data processing experience including at least one year in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software, plus one year of LAN operating systems installation and maintenance.
  • B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two- or four-year college or university with an Associate's degree in Data Processing, Computer Science, Business Administration, or related field and five years of data processing experience including at least one year in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software, plus one year of LAN operating systems installation and maintenance.
  • C) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and seven years of data processing experience, including at least one year in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software, plus one year of LAN operating systems installation and maintenance.
  • D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C).

Additional Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Windows Server 2012/2016 Server operation and management in a LAN/WAN environment
  • MAC OSX, Linux, Wireless Networking, Network Architectures and related technologies are a plus
  • Familiarity with VMware and SCCM is advantageous
  • Strong troubleshooting, research, and documentation skills
  • Excellent customer service and communication abilities, with project and time management skills
  • Ability to present clear, concise information to administrators, managers, technology staff, and end users
  • Reliable transportation required
