Job Description

Smurfit Westrock in Smyrna, Georgia is looking for a Technical Support Technician (Electrical/Controls) to support customer projects on site. This role blends hands-on field work with remote technical support, focusing on electrical and control system upgrades, configuration, and kit development to meet client needs.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to technical support requests via telephone, email, and text message.
  • Diagnose and resolve machinery hardware, software, and network issues.
  • Travel up to 30% may be required to diagnose and repair machinery.
  • Configure electrical components prior to shipment to customers.
  • Document technical service calls and contribute to training AI models.
  • Wiring and testing PLCs, servo drives/controllers, safety relays/controllers, VFDs and HMIs.
  • Assist in developing field machinery upgrade kits including wiring and programming.
  • Participate in programming, testing and installation of machinery on testing lines.
  • Create technical bulletins, procedures and troubleshooting guides.
  • Remotely troubleshoot servo systems, PLC code and HMI applications.
  • Comply with Smurfit Westrock safety protocols in addition to applicable state and federal safety regulations.
  • Perform field machinery electrical upgrades.

Requirements

  • More than five years of experience in PLC programming, servo systems, HMI development software, and safety controllers.
  • Experience troubleshooting and setting up pneumatic components, vision systems, VFDs, sensors, hot glue systems, and safety devices.
  • Experience working on and troubleshooting 480/230 volt AC systems.
  • Experience with multi-axis servo-driven equipment including Allen-Bradley (AB) and Bosch Rexroth.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Professional English proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Ability to create and maintain virtual machines on a PC.
  • Willingness to cover a weekly rotational 24/7 technical support line.
  • Setting up and troubleshooting machine Ethernet and ProfiNet networks.
  • Wiring and troubleshooting experience on safety circuits, motor controls, and 24-volt control circuits.
  • Experience with hot glue systems is preferred.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
