How we started

The South Adams County Water and Sanitation District formed in 1951 under the State of Colorado Special District provisions to serve the area now known as Commerce City. While serving the Commerce City population, it remains a separate entity and is presently the largest combined Water and Sanitation District in Colorado, spanning over 65 square miles and delivering service to nearly 70,000 customers.

Recent history

In 1996, the Record of Decision for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal cleanup was finalized. The Arsenal was designated as a future Wildlife Refuge, and an additional 4,000 acre‑feet of water supply was added to the District. This supplemental supply is treated water purchased from Denver Water and blended with the District’s potable well water prior to delivery.

The district today

The District is developing water supplies capable of delivering up to 27,000 acre‑feet of water per year, enabling service to about 54,000 ERUs. These supplies include treated Denver Water water, surface water from farmer and irrigation sources, expanded potable alluvial well supplies, and a separate irrigation system. A major initiative is underway to build one of the nation’s largest independent irrigation systems in northern Commerce City, providing non‑potable alluvial well water for irrigation and other non‑potable uses.
