Job Description
This itinerant field based Microcomputer Technical Support Specialist role provides design, installation, troubleshooting, and training for computer software, operating systems, and LAN/WAN environments across Erie 1 BOCES districts.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, install, implement, support, and maintain computer software applications and operating systems.
- Install, customize, and maintain vendor supplied software and LAN/WAN operations.
- Generate incident tickets as required and ensure timely follow-up and closure of all assigned calls.
- Monitor, configure, and tune LANs or LAN applications for optimal performance; organize LAN documentation.
- Assist in training and instruction of users in LAN operating systems and LAN applications.
- Troubleshoot computer equipment used in the delivery of BOCES services.
- Install, troubleshoot, support, and maintain communications software used to connect to enterprise servers or dial-up connections; provide related user training.
- Evaluate the network and provide recommendations to the Senior Microcomputer Technical Support Specialist and to the Supervisor, Microcomputer Technical Support Specialist.
- Act as liaison between the WNYRIC and School District customers regarding in networked hardware, software, and application issues.
- Perform physical tasks such as keyboarding, lifting, driving a motor vehicle, and duties related to installation, troubleshooting, and support of computer devices.
- Work on-site in schools where students, teachers, and administrators are present; travel to building sites within assigned districts with a valid NYS driver's license and a reliable vehicle.
- Complete and submit official forms, time sheets, and billing reports in a timely manner; maintain communications with supervisors and team members.
- Familiar with setup and use of Active Directory, Netware/Novell, Windows, Ethernet, TCP/IP, Lotus Notes, PCs, Macs, Mac OS, and iOS as required by assignments.
- Other duties may be assigned in alignment with the civil service job description for this title.
Qualifications
- A) A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university plus two years of computer programming experience, including at least one year in programming and/or maintaining vendor supplied operating software; or
- B) An Associate or higher degree in Data Processing, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field plus four years of data processing experience, including two years of programming and at least one year maintaining vendor supplied operating software; or
- C) A high school diploma or equivalency plus six years of data processing experience, including two years of programming and at least one year maintaining vendor supplied operating software; or
- D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as described above.
Additional Qualifications
- Experience working in LAN/WAN environments with familiarity in Windows, Mac OS/iOS, and Windows Server and newer platforms.
- PC operation and management is mandatory; experience administering Microsoft Active Directory, Group Policies, DHCP/DNS, and computer imaging using WDS/SCCM is required.
- Knowledge of WAN, content filtering, firewalls, enterprise mobility management, and related technologies is a plus.
- Strong customer service and communications skills, along with troubleshooting, research, and documentation abilities.
- Valid NYS driver license and reliable car transportation are required.
